Jeremy Winter is a partner in Baker & McKenzie London’s dispute resolution department, with particular responsibility for disputes in the engineering and infrastructure sectors.  His experience includes all kinds of contractual disputes, with a strong focus on international arbitration.
Increasingly, he is successful in resolving problems before they turn into formal litigation or arbitration actions. He has been involved in projects in over 30 different countries, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, the CIS and Africa.

Representative clients, cases or matters

- Representing a Russian bank in litigation in the English court in a large claim against a guarantor of corporate loans;

- Advising a German contractor on a negotiated settlement achieved with the owner regarding the collapse of a     building close to Moscow;
- Advising another German company on the consequences of the collapse of a cold store warehouse near to Moscow;  
- Acting for a pipeline contractor with claims for additional costs arising from technical difficulties in the construction of part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline;
- Representing a contractor consortium in an arbitration claim concerning the construction of an airport in Kazakhstan;

- Representing a joint venture partner in an arbitration with its joint venture partner over responsibility for delays in the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Qatar;   
- Providing an EPC power plant contractor with advice including arbitration representation) on a wide variety of legal, commercial and technical issues arising under contracts with customers and sub-contractors for plants in multiple jurisdictions, including the UK, Qatar, Nigeria, Abu Dhabi, Finland and Georgia.

Wherever permitted, he acts as advocate in his cases. His appointment as a Solicitor Advocate allows him to conduct cases in the High Court and above (including appeals from arbitrations and adjudications).

Jeremy Winter is a frequent writer and speaker on arbitration and construction and engineering law topics.
He chaired the committee that wrote the Society of Construction Law Delay and Disruption Protocol, a document which was designed to provide guidance on recurring issues concerning delay on construction and engineering projects.

He is an occasional guest lecturer at University College London, on negotiation in litigation and arbitration.

Jeremy Winter is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Companion of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a former member of the ICE’s Advisory Panel on Legal Affairs. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society, and a member of the Society of Construction Law and the Technology & Construction Solicitors’ Association (of which he was a committee member). He is an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

Jeremy graduated from Warwick University wih an LLB in Law in 1975. After training at another City of London firm, he joined the London office of Baker & McKenzie in 1980. He became a partner n 1987. In May 2000 he was admitted as a Solicitor Advocate, with rights ofaudience in the higher courts of England and Wales on civil matters. In 2014 he was admitted as a registered practitioner of the Dubai International Financial Centre Court.

In addition to his native English, he has a good understanding of French, German, Italian and Spanish.

The Chambers UK Directory - 2009 Edition says:  ‘The commercially astute Jeremy Winter is a superb contentious construction lawyer who is well known for his work assisting major purchasers with avoiding disputes, but is also well placed to get the best result should these disputes fully develop’.

In the 2011 edition, he is praised for his 'incredibly concise and commercial approach'.

In 2014, the directory said that he has "one of the sharpest and finest brains in the industry".
