In May 2013, the Russian Arbitration Association was officially registered as a non-profit organization in Russia, joined by approximately 70 representatives of the Russian, international law firms and individuals specializing in arbitration. The Association was founded to support development of arbitration in Russia and the CIS countries, and promotion of Russian and CIS arbitrators at the international level. One of the key objective of the Arbitration Association is to create a modern arbitration court for resolving international as well as Russian domestic commercial disputes. In July 2013 a working group formed of the Arbitration Association members started to develop the Regulation for administering disputes under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. Another important area of activity will be the development and implementation of education programs aimed for training of arbitrators as well as counsel on dispute resolution procedures used in arbitration. The Arbitration Association held a general meeting at Moscow's Metropol Hotel on June 20, 2013. More than 60 professionals attended the event, including the Arbitration Association's members and invited guests. At the meeting the present members elected the Board, Arbitrators' Nominating Committee, and Internal Auditing Committee. Out of 17 candidates nominated for the Board, originating from the UK, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, France and the Czech Republic, 11 were elected. The Charter of the Arbitration Association provides that the Board is a permanent, collective managing body whose responsibilities include the development of the Arbitration Association, working out the Rules for resolving disputes, and taking decisions on challenges to arbitrators. The voting resulted in the election of a number of prominent arbitration specialists, such as Timur Aitkulov (Clifford Chance, Moscow), David Goldberg (White and Case, London), Alevtina Kamelkova(Alcatel-Lucent, Moscow), Andrei Loboda (Injurservice, Moscow), Yury Monastyrsky (Monastyrsky, Zyuba, Stepanov & Partners, Moscow), Ilya Nikiforov (EPAM, Moscow), Noah Rubins (Freshfields, Paris), Vassily Rudomino (Alrud, Moscow) Tatyana Slipachuk (Sayenko Kharenko, Kiev) Vladimir Khvalei (Baker & McKenzie, Moscow) and Alexandre Khrapoutski (Sysouev Bondar Khrapoutski, Minsk). The general meeting then selected the Arbitrators' Nominating Committee – a body within the Association which will nominate arbitrators for resolving disputes falling under arbitrations administered by RAA. The voting resulted in the election of the following members to the Arbitrators' Nominating Committee: Tamara Evgenievna Abova(Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow), Francesca Albert (Dechert, Moscow),Alexei Dudko (Hogan Lovells, Moscow), Galina Zukova(White and Case, Moscow), Ekaterina Kobrin (Baker & McKenzie, Moscow), Sergei Nikolaevich Lebedev(MGIMO, Moscow), and Gleb Sevastyanov (Treteisky Sud Journal, St. Petersburg). Roman Zykov, an attorney with many years of experience in international arbitration, was elected as the Secretary General of the Russian Arbitration Association. To supervise the financial and economic activities of the Arbitration Association, the Internal Auditing Committee was formed consisting of Dmitry Lysenko (Baker &McKenzie, Moscow), Dmitry Marenkov (Trade and Invest, Cologne) and Marina Titievskaya (Law offices "NOMOS", Moscow). The Russian Arbitration Association’s website is based on the Russian online arbitration journal www.arbitrations.ru. The Association’s website will become a point of reference when it comes to arbitration in Russia and the CIS, both for Russian and international users. |
