Advisor, Nagashima Ohno and Tsunematu
Professor Oda is the Sir Ernest Satow Professor of Japanese Law at the University College London (1990-). He is a solicitor (England and Wales) and attorney at law (Japan). He is an advisor to Nagashima Ohno and Tsunematu, which is one of the top law firms in Japan.
Professor Oda’s practice focuses on Japanese and Russian law and on arbitration and natural resources projects. He held the chair of Russian law at the University of Tokyo before moving into practice. He taught Japanese competition law at the College d'Europe in Brugge, Belgium for more than 10 years after teaching at Cornell Law School as a visiting professor also for 10 years. He also teaches regularly at Vienna State University. He now has a chair at Waseda University (Tokyo). He divides his time between Tokyo, London, and Moscow.
Professor Oda has advised Japanese companies in major Russian energy projects. He was an advisor on Russian law at the former JNOC and later advised JOGMEC on various Russian projects. He has been advising Sakhalin I project since its inception. He is currently an advisor to SODECO. He has advised major Japanese trading houses and upstream oil companies in projects in Russia.
As a dispute lawyer, he has advised Japanese clients in disputes involving Russian companies. He has been the Japanese representative to the ICC Court of Arbitration (Paris) (2003-2016). Professor Oda was a consultant to Herbert Smith for 17 years.
Upon recommendation from the Japanese government, Professor Oda joined the list of arbitrators at ICSID in 2016. He is currently a member of the ad hoc committee on a case involving a CIS country.
